JOB PURPOSE

To clean and maintain Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, to ensure the Museum retains its 5 star Visit Scotland rating and to enhance the visitor experience at the property. The Museum Domestic Assistant should provide an efficient and effective service through high standards of cleaning and maintenance based on the needs of the property all year round, including events and functions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

The Museum Domestic Assistant is responsible for a wide variety of duties in connection with the cleanliness and maintenance of the property. These duties involve keeping the Museum and other areas of the building and Education Pavilion clean and functional, following best-practice at all times, and maintaining its 5 star Visit Scotland rating. Cleaning and maintenance of the Museum is also key to ensure RBBM achieves its vision of becoming Scotland’s must-see visitor attraction, acclaimed internationally and loved locally.

Specific duties include:

• To ensure that a high level of cleanliness is maintained throughout the Museum and education buildings on a daily basis.
• Opening up and securing the Museum building and / or Education Pavilion, including alarm setting, after hours
• Each MDA will be responsible for an area and will be expected to clean to the frequency and standards set out.
• To use cleaning materials appropriately, as instructed and economically; to inform Line Manager when stocks are low.
• To ensure that tools and equipment are in good working order, reporting any faults to Line Manager.
• Wearing correct uniform, name badges, or PPE as required
• General cleaning of surfaces (e.g. window-sills, skirting boards and doors) and the vacuuming/cleaning of floors as appropriate and cleaning of the public areas, offices, meeting room, retail, café areas, public and staff toilets and entrances to the Museum and other areas as required.
• General maintenance, include things like replacing bulbs, function and event set ups if required.
• All MDAs are also required to contribute to major deep cleaning tasks during certain periods of the years.
• Empty and clean bins and remove waste to designated area, including the separation of waste, i.e. recycling, and any other duties which are in line with the Museum’s Green Tourism Award standards
• Report to Line Manager any defects seen which are likely to affect public experience and security.
• The MDA is required to use only approved cleaning materials and in accordance with manufacturers printed instructions and COSHH regulations. Chemicals should never be mixed with other chemicals.
• Ensure Safe Systems of Work and COVID 19 Guidelines are implemented effectively within function and with external contractors.
• Will be a frequent user of cleaning materials and tools. The postholder is required to attend the Trust’s training programs to maintain and improve on their technical skills.

The current duties of this job do not require a criminal records (Disclosure Scotland) check to be carried out.

Our exciting digital programme may include, but is not limited to, delivery for social media content, live demonstrations, webinars and ‘Meet the Expert’ sessions. Your role will also be to work with ASC’s stakeholders to support in the creation and delivery of the content.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

As directed by the Visitor Services Manager to carry out a wide range of collections care duties including:

• In line with current NTS best practice, clean and care for the collection of furniture, books, artworks, glass, ceramics, metals, textiles, other objects and historic interiors.
• Ensure all public areas are kept clean and tidy.
• Work with your line manager to allow visitors to interact directly with the objects on display whilst ensuring that their condition is monitored and maintained.
• Keep up to date and accurate conservation records.
• Help to ensure the NTS Integrated Pest Management regime is in place and monitored.
• Help to ensure Emergency Plans and related equipment is up to date
• Work with conservation volunteers and take an active role in staff and volunteer training in liaison with your line manager.

• Ensure collections care, cleaning and conservation materials are available, properly maintained and stored.

The VSA Collection Care Assistant is responsible for ensuring that the collection at Brodie Castle is looked after and protected.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
As a Collections Care Assistant, you will be responsible for the day-to-day care of collections at Brodie Castle , Hoovering and Dusting of the Castle and making sure the Castle is ready for opening to the Public.
The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that best preventive conservation and collections care practices are followed through the implementation of an effective collections care regime in line with Trust policies and procedures.
The role will include engaging with visitors about the collection care work of the National Trust for Scotland when undertaking cleaning activities in the house. The post holder will also work closely with the function and event team ensuring all functions and events are operated in such a manner as to minimise risk to the collection without compromising the event itself.
The post holder will be part of a wider team of employees and volunteers, helping to support the property where necessary.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Collections Care Assistant is responsible for a wide variety of duties in connection with the care of the property. These duties involve the correct handling and conservation-cleaning of the collections following best-practice at all times and general housekeeping duties throughout the Castle and other buildings.

Specific duties include:

• Best-practice conservation-cleaning of the collections (furniture, metals, ceramics, glass, works of art, textiles, rugs, books, and other artefacts), using property-specific cleaning plans and approved and recommended methods, materials and equipment;
• Conducting a deep conservation-clean of collections & property pre/post-season opening and setting up/putting property to bed pre/post season opening;
• Monitoring the condition of the collections, both through routine, informal checking and formal record keeping (e.g. environmental conditions, pest damage, condition reporting mechanical wear and tear, completing Accidental Damage Reports). Any concerns, damage or loss should be reported immediately to the Duty Manager and the Regional Conservator and Curator;
• Contributing to the Trust’s Integrated Pest Management strategy and facilitating required treatments under the guidance of the Regional Conservator;
• Conservation cleaning of historic fabric surfaces (e.g. window-sills, dado rails, skirting boards, doors) and the vacuuming/cleaning of all floors and staircases as appropriate;
• Informing requirements for conservation and cleaning material/ equipment supplies with assistance from the Duty Manager and Regional Conservator, to ensure adequate sufficient stocks are maintained/ordered;
• Assist/ support with the collection care to facilitate functions and events ensuring safe handling and storage of collections and implementation of appropriate preventive measures.
• Work with Collection Care Volunteers with support and assistance from the Regional Conservator, Curator and Visitor Services Supervisor.
• Adhere to the property’s quality standards including wearing of uniform dependant on the role;
• Ensure health and welfare of property staff, volunteers and visitors by adhering to the Trust’s Health, Safety and Environment policies and guidelines. This includes working within the property’s “Safe System of Work” (the system for managing Health & Safety).
• Develop conservation and collection care knowledge and skills to ensure the highest levels of conservation-cleaning and collections care are adhered to/maintained at the property through attendance at the Trust’s annual Collections Care training programme and any other relevant training courses;
• Continued documentation of the collection to ensure collections records are maintained and up-to-date in line with NTS collections management procedures.

SCOPE OF JOB
People Management
• Not a line manager; but will be expected to work with and supervise volunteers at the property assisting with collection care and conservation tasks.

• Will work closely with other property colleagues, in particular the tour guides and VSS Collections Care and Volunteers.
• Will also have occasional interaction with other technical/specialist advisory colleagues based in other NTS locations and departments and with external contractors.

Introduction:

2022 has already proven to be a very exciting year at Muckle Brig as we finally opened our new Lind & Lime Gin distillery on Coburg Street. This greatly enhanced our production capacity for gin, but also provided us with a superb new brand home where we now welcome visitors for weekly tours. The feedback and response to these tours has been superb.

In the brief few months since we opened, the new distillery space has also accommodated festival launches, private events and supper clubs with some of Edinburgh’s top restaurants. We have a fantastic venue here, and we want to grow its reputation across the city.

Moving forward, the Port of Leith Distillery will open in early 2023. This is intended to become a major new tourism landmark in Edinburgh. We’d better start planning the launch parties!

The role:

We’re looking for a passionate, super friendly, outgoing and enthusiastic Tour Guide with excellent multi-tasking skills to join our whisky, gin and people-loving Visitor Experience Team.

As a Lind & Lime Tour Guide you will be the face of our Gin Distillery, leading our guests through our Tour Experience, tasting, bottling, cocktail making and so much more.

Lind & Lime is a fun, fast-paced, diverse environment to work in. Excellent communication skills are paramount to a successful day. Your skills, enthusiasm and diplomacy will shine through for our guests and your colleagues within the distillery.

Duties include:

Welcome and orientate guests
Guide guests round our distillery providing the historical stories behind our gin, bottles and botanicals, facts about our still and how it works, demonstrating the mini-bottling and labelling process and assisting guests to bottle and label their own mini, finishing with cocktail making at the Lind & Lime Bar.
Setting up, clearing, cleaning and resetting the tour route for each tour, including cocktail making equipment.
Ongoing cleanliness and presentability of the tour area.
Assisting with guests needs as required to ensure an excellent experience
Assisting with Private Tours and Events on an ad hoc basis
Retail shifts on rotation in our LEXCO Shop
Weekly and monthly stock takes across Tour and Retail stock
Fulfilling retail orders for collection and posting
Being a superb ambassador for all aspects of Muckle Brig including Lind & Lime, Port of Leith Distillery and LEXCO, our export company.

You are a superb communicator with an enthusiastic and flexible approach with the ability to adapt to any situation. You can create a fabulous atmosphere for groups large and small. You are a competent multi-tasker who thrives on being part of a team delivering excellent visitor experience.

JOB PURPOSE

To assist the Learning Manager in delivering a range of learning-based programming, including schools’ workshops, guided tours, events, family activities, educational projects. This role also includes certain front-of-house duties such as admissions, retail and café work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

• To deliver the learning and engagement provision at the property to a set of agreed standards, as well as assisting in developing new and existing learning programmes across ages and ability-levels.
• To help develop and maintain the programmes and events at the property.
• To proactively develop a knowledge of Burns and provide specialised tours and talks to the general public and visiting groups.
• To ensure that the programmes on offer are relevant to potential users and are evaluated for further development in order to ensure uptake.
• To help develop and maintain RBBMs social media presence.
• To work closely with volunteers at the property and assist with the volunteer management programme at RBBM.
• To support the Learning Manager in ensuring the best presentation of the property and the safe and efficient provision of quality learning experiences.
• To ensure Safe Systems of Work are implemented effectively within all activities undertaken and with external contractors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE

Qualifications

Desirable
• Educated to degree level in a related field including but not limited to history, literature, arts, education, language, music, drama, tourism or possessing similar experience.

Experience

Essential
• Experience of working within a museum, education or cultural setting.
• Excellent organisation skills, creative thinking and attention to detail.
• An awareness of the Scottish education system and current curricular thinking.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (especially with regard to addressing groups)
• Ability to work directly and effectively with learners of all ages, abilities and interests.
• Competent user of Microsoft Office products and social media sites including, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
• Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
• A flexible attitude and willingness to work evenings and weekends if required.
• A demonstrable interest in the heritage sector.

Desirable
• Project management skills.
• Experience in development and delivery of learning programmes, events and resources for all ages.
• Understanding of varied approaches to learning.
• Cash reconciliation duties including start and end of day tasks; experience handling cash accurately and processing sales would be an advantage.

DIMENSIONS AND SCOPE OF JOB

Scale

• This post will be based at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, but may occasionally require visits to the Bachelors Club, Tarbolton and Souter Johnnie’s Cottage, Kirkoswald.

People Management
• No line management responsibility but will work closely with staff members and volunteers at RBBM.
• Will work with a wide range of external stakeholders including teachers, facilitators and partner organisations.

Finance Management

• Not a budget-holder but will be expected to take responsibility for the careful and effective management of materials, equipment and resources.
