JOB PURPOSE

As part of the Estate team you will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the Estate in accordance with the Mar Lodge Estate management plan. To deliver all aspects of ground, building and plant/machinery maintenance at Mar Lodge Estate to a high standard. In addition, actively participate in management of the estate woodlands, tracks and footpaths. To be the public face of the National Trust for Scotland whilst working on the ground.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Undertake ground maintenance to maintain the policies and garden areas to include grass cutting, fencing, spraying, track and footpath maintenance.

• Undertake building maintenance to maintain Mar Lodge, short term holiday lets, residential and commercial buildings in excellent condition to include plumbing, joinery, painting and decorating. Also carry out maintenance work to office/yard areas.

• Biomass plant upkeep and maintenance including: ensuring the smooth running of the heating system, year round monitoring of the woodchip levels, woodchip management, daily monitoring of the boiler and efficiency.

• Assist in the servicing/repair of plant/machinery

• Attending to any administrative needs of the job (e.g. health and safety documents, HAV forms) in a timely and efficient manner.

• Participate in ‘on-call’ rota for weekend cover if required. Pro rata, per annum

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE

Qualifications

Essential
 Qualification at HNC level or equivalent in a land or trade based subject or significant equivalent practical experience;
 Full driving licence valid for driving in the UK
 Operator’s certificate for agricultural tractors
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; confident in interacting and dealing with a wide range of people; and able to represent the Trust;
 Good organisational and time-management skills – including the ability to prioritise work where necessary;
 Eye for detail and finish, quality standard and best practice.

Desirable
 Operator’s certificates for basic chainsaw operations

 This role will involve cash reconciliation duties as appointed by the Visitor Services Supervisor.

In this customer facing role, you will assist with general maintenance of the playground and garden areas. Maintenance responsibilities will include litter picking, emptying bins, and ensuring the playground area is maintained in excellent condition for our visitors via playground checks (training will be provided for this). Garden duties will include weeding, watering, and strimming, as well as helping visitors in our garden centre. Working hours will be 7.45am to 4.30pm on a 4 days on, 4 days off basis, including weekends.

The Role:
The STEM programme is delivered through practical hands on workshops, family events and teacher training within four key themes: Aerospace, Green Energy, Environmental
Science, and Sustainable Design, these themes make the most of the existing expertise in the wider Prince’s Foundation, as well as the local STEM employment opportunities and expertise.
Due to themes and existing expertise on the estate a candidate with a background in physics, engineering or digital technologies would be at an advantage. The candidate should however be comfortable teaching STEM subjects out with their area of expertise to a primary and secondary school level, with support from the wider Education team and industry experts.
The wider education programme on Dumfries House Estate is delivered across themes including: STEM; Food, Farming and Horticulture; Outdoor Activity; Hospitality; Textiles and Building Crafts. Due to the holistic nature of the programme, the post holder will be required to assist in these areas from time to time, take part in CPD in these areas and work with colleagues across the education team on cross curricular education projects.
The post holder will assist in the development and implementation of workshops, industry training programmes, short courses and project related education activity including large scale events and cross curricular delivery. The post holder will also prepare and deliver classes across a range of ages as well as maintaining stakeholder relationships with industry and education partners.

Key Tasks
Specific Duties will include:
Supporting the Education Director and Curriculum Manager to ensure the smooth delivery of the Prince’s Foundation’s education strategy and core STEM programmes, a responsibility which will include:
• Designing, supporting and delivering STEM workshops activities to a primary and secondary audience in line with The Curriculum For Excellence, Learning for Sustainability, STEM education strategy and the Principles of Harmony.
• Participate in evaluation and review of workshops and education activities in a timely manner and contribute to education reports for directors, partners and funders.
• Ensure education activities are suitable for learners by writing, reviewing, updating and following risk assessments, as well as following health and safety procedures for first aid and incident reporting.
• Keeping up to date with current practices and policies in STEM education, through networking, CPD and personal development.
• Supporting the development of strong relationships with industry and education partners such as STEM industry funders and partners, STEM Education organisations and charities and local authority and Scottish Education representatives. Work with these partners to enhance the STEM offer at Dumfries House through co delivery and design of workshops and activities.
• Preparing, and maintaining equipment and facilities to a high standard prior to and following education activity, monitor and request stock as appropriate.
• Further the wider education work of The Prince’s Foundation through contribution to team meetings, joint education activity and events and cross curricular CPD sessions
• Support the STEM manager to ensure that the maintenance of the STEM building(s) is completed, informing relevant Prince’s Foundation staff when maintenance is required.
• Maintain familiarity with The Prince’s Foundation handbook and relevant HR procedures.

Our ranger team at Bowhill maintain facilities, conserve the natural heritage, and provide educational information & activities to visitors, school children and groups.

Our team of Hosts/Guides are responsible for providing a world class service to guests at Holyrood Distillery, and – this year – will be part of the team that helps launch our first single malt whisky!

Hosts/Guides will be the face of Holyrood Distillery – so must be passionate and knowledgeable about our products and experiences; and be a genuine people person with a passion for Edinburgh and our place in it

They work within our on-site bars, leading tours and hosting events; actively promoting the brand, products, and experiences. They may also be asked to perform other duties across the distillery which will involve working within the shop, taking bookings, assisting with admin tasks, and opportunities to learn about, and be more involved in, production operations.

They will have responsibility for the daily stock and presentation of the Distillery, including the sale and up-sale of spirit and shop products, tastings, pouring and presenting drinks, and other related activity.

Culzean Castle is one of Scotland’s most loved castles, as one of the Visitor Services team within the castle, you’ll ensure that all visitors receive an excellent visitor experience and leave felling inspired by this magical place. This will be achieved through being welcoming; engaging and knowledgeable; prepared to answer visitors’ questions about objects, stories of the castle and its family and the NTS.

The role involves some physical activity and will include standing for periods of time and/or walking through the building during guided tours. Due to the historic nature of the building physical access from the upper levels in the event of an emergency is currently only by stairs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsibility for the Line Management of the Castle Team and Volunteers
• Responsibility for the Castle opening and closing procedures in the absence of the Collections Care Office
• Sharing the benefits of Membership with ticket holders and always actively looking at innovative and interesting ways to encourage Membership recruitment.
• Ensure the highest level of customer service ensuring all visitors receive an excellent visitor experience
• Maximise visitor enjoyment and understanding of the property through engaging visitors with the history of Culzean and the Kennedy family
• Delivery of a broad range of high quality guided tours and talks about Culzean for the general public and organised groups
• To deliver a range of engaging school workshops, for all ages and abilities
• Enhance the visitor experience through use of third person costumed interpretation, object handling and cookery demonstrations where applicable
• Actively promote the work of the NTS and the value of NTS membership to existing and potential members
• Be mindful of security needs of the property and its contents, minimising opportunities for theft or damage through diligent monitoring of visitors and the implementation of security measures (e.g. locking up procedures etc.)
• Be aware of the conservation needs of the property and its contents and minimise the risk of accidental damage through engaging with visitors and the implementation of appropriate conservation measures
• Share in the common responsibility of implementing the Trust’s Health & Safety policy, being mindful at all times of health & safety of self, staff, volunteers, and visitors
• Share in the common responsibility for the safe evacuation/management of colleagues and visitors in the event of a fire or security alert or alarm

Desirable
• Previous experience or volunteer experience in museum, tourism or conservation sector
