JOB PURPOSE

Heritage Planning refers to the general process of assessing the significance of heritage, understanding its intrinsic character, and providing for its conservation and interpretive needs and opportunities. Heritage Planning builds knowledge and supports the conservation and interpretation of heritage.

The role of Heritage Planner exists to support the development of an understanding and appreciation of Trust properties. This will be achieved through the continual development and enhancement of our knowledge base and the presentation of the significance of our properties by overseeing the production of a range of heritage planning outcomes including Conservation Plans, Management Plans and Property Statements (including statements of significance).

The NNR accolade recognises the best in Scottish natural heritage and supports public access to these special places. The Trust currently own (wholly or partially) 8 National Nature Reserves (NNR). These are:
• Ben Lawers
• Corrieshalloch Gorge (Scotland’s smallest NNR)
• Glencoe
• Mar Lodge Estate (Scotland’s largest NNR)
• St Abbs Head
• St Kilda
• Staffa
• Torridon (part of which is included within the Beinn Eighe NNR)

In line with NatureScot NNR selection criteria, and to support management of these properties, the Trust aim to have an in date and comprehensive management plan in place for each of the NNRs in our portfolio.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Assist Trust staff to create products which easily allow an appreciation and understanding of the significance of the NNR properties and enables engagement with a range of audiences. This will involve:
a. Guiding staff on the production and content of heritage plans, including current standards and best practice;
b. Performing an editing role to ensure consistency in style, format and accessibility of language;
c. Enable others to grasp the concept of significance through guidance and support.
2. Assist senior staff to commission external work, as required, through:
a. The production of conservation plan/management plan (or other similar pieces of work) briefs;
b. Taking part, where required, in the tendering and recruitment of consultants;
c. Assisting in the management of consultants to ensure the required quality and relevant standards of the end product.
3. Assist the Head of Heritage Planning to ensure the Heritage Planning process adheres to international standards and best practice, by:
a. Keeping abreast of current work by peer organisations and developments in international standards;
b. Reviewing best practice from around NNR sites in Scotland and the UK;
c. Developing and maintaining a network of contacts to share experience and new thinking;
d. Updating relevant internal guidance.
4. Work with staff and the Head of Heritage Planner to identify current knowledge, and potential gaps in this knowledge, across Trust properties. This should include collating and managing this information, working with Archives and Library Services, to make this resource available;
5. Other duties which may arise, to ensure that any work produced under the umbrella of the Heritage Planning department is outcome led, focused on delivery, and meets the needs of properties.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE

Qualifications

Essential
• Degree in one of more subject areas of: ecology, countryside management or heritage management (or similar);
• A driving licence, current for driving within the United Kingdom.

Desirable:
• Post graduate qualification in relevant subject area.

Experience
• Understanding of current best practice in conservation management, especially in relation to the assessment and articulation of significance;
• Demonstrable experience of creating statements of significance;
• Organising and/or producing management and strategic plans within the heritage sector;
• Highly effective communication skills (written and oral);
• Highly developed organisational skills;
• Excellent analytical, editing, report writing and questioning skills;
• Understanding of, and experience working with, multi-disciplinary teams;
• General understanding of the heritage environment, and the particular challenges and opportunities of the charity/”not for profit” sector.

• The post holder will cover properties across the entire portfolio of the Trust;

Inveraray Castle is based in Scotland, on the edge of Loch Fyne, and surrounded by the majesty of the west highlands. The castle is the seat of Clan Campbell, home to the Dukes of Argyll, since the eighteenth century and it has been featured in many films and documentaries.

Main Duties

  • Manage and monitor car park cash collection, card payments and pay by mobile contracts.
  • Procurement and manage car park machine framework.
  • Work with Regions to monitor car park income.
  • Ensure parking compliance with British Parking Association code of conduct.
  • Manage new catering concession contract.
  • Manage current visitor services commercial leases and agreements in conjunction with Regions.
  • Support Regions with the development of visitor commercial activities.
  • Provide commercial visitor guidance and support for Regional projects.

Job Purpose:

Take an active role in the day to day operation in all aspects of the venue (front
desk, galleries, café and gift shop), working as part of a team to ensure successful
delivery of services to the public.

Below is a range of tasks you will be required to perform in the role. You will be trained on
all aspects, with rotation of duties managed through the staff rota.

Duties include:
To champion a world class visitor experience at all times and act as a role model for
exceptional service.

Undertake reception duties, (eg admission of members of the public, dealing with
enquiries, process bookings, dealing with retail sales, maintain and monitor records, etc)

Work in the Visitor Centre shop actively upselling products, re-stocking shelves and
ensuring general up keep of the area.

Work in the visitor centre café preparing and serving light meals, snacks, hot and cold
beverages.

Control stock rotation and manage stock levels in café.

Manage stock inventory for retail and visitor materials.

To proactively encourage donations, take every opportunity to upsell events, café and
shop facilities, including corporate events and group bookings.

Accurately deliver GTOS Visitor Centre and local visitor information using a range of
resources including, on site materials and digital tools.

Follow daily cleaning and housekeeping tasks associated with maintaining an excellent
customer service experience, including but not limited to; clearing tables and disposing of food waste, washing up, cleaning of equipment, stores, customer toilet checks throughout the day, stairwell and lift clean and clear of any debris, welcome area outside building is clean as well as all public facing areas of the visitor centre.

Assist with development of profitable retail operations and excellent customer service.
Assist with the proper security of the venue, including key holding duties.

In line with legal and operational guidelines, process cash, cheque and card
transactions, bank income and complete daily and weekly income records.

Assist at events including private views, education activities and group visits.

Undertaking minor maintenance/ repairs as directed to the displays, fixtures and
fittings, including replacing light bulbs (where possible), monitoring environmental
conditions (where appropriate) and ensuring that all matters of significance are recorded appropriately and reported to the Centre Manager for attention.

Build and maintain good working relationships with colleagues within the organisation.

Comply with, and ensure compliance with, all Live Borders policies and procedures.

Ensure services meet Health and Safety standards established by Live Borders.

We have an outstanding opportunity to join our dedicated team at our Lagavulin Visitor Center as a Brand Home Guide.

You will be responsible for:

Being an integral part of the visitor centre team, as a Brand Home Guide, you’ll be required to deliver high standards of customer service and an outstanding and memorable visitor experience. Our tours are the opportunity for the public to learn who we are and what we do, you’ll be guiding them around our beautiful distillery representing the brand and Diageo using the full training provided. 
  
You will assist with ticket sales and promoting our brand throughout the full experience. From warmly greeting our guests to providing advice and information on the offerings of our outstanding visitor experience.

There will be shop duties and upselling products will be required alongside the merchandising of our other products in the retail area. 

You’ll help with the planning and implementation of special events throughout the year. 

This role will require weekend and evening work.

JOB PURPOSE
This is an exciting and varied role within the Visitor Services Team, primarily based at the Tenement House as part of the Tenement House, Holmwood and Weaver’s Cottage cluster. We are looking for energetic, cheerful, and talkative individuals to join our team this season.
Working at all 3 sites will be required on a rota basis, but the role will be primarily based at The Tenement House. Through engaging and informative interactions, you’ll help share stories about these iconic sites and build support and understanding for the National Trust for Scotland.

• You’ll help welcome visitors from across the globe and ensure they have an enjoyable and memorable experience here from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave.

• You’ll work flexibly and with an eye for detail, ensuring the smooth and safe operations in Admissions, Retail, Catering and Events activities whilst making the property the best possible place to visit and work.

• By maintaining excellent standards of service, optimising opportunities to generate income, and ensuring that the site and its assets are safe and secure you will be a vital part of furthering the valuable work of the National Trust for Scotland.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Provide a consistently high standard of visitor care
• Engage with and make our visitors feel welcome at all times, exploring the unique exhibitions and experiences each site has to offer.
• Be responsible and proactive. Ensuring all day-to-day tasks are completed as instructed.
• Provide a responsive, friendly and efficient service tailored to the needs of both individual visitors and tour groups.
• Be passionate about our sites. Develop a thorough understanding of the sites within the Glasgow Cluster, enabling you to share stories with visitors, offer ideas to help them enjoy their visit and answer common questions. Training of each property will be provided.
• Have a flexible approach to working hours and days including working weekend and Bank Holidays as appropriate.
• To work across departments when necessary, supporting the wider Holmwood and Weaver’s Cottage teams.
• Promote other local properties and the work of the Trust.
• Focus on the details. Ensure retail or catering displays remain stocked, tidy and enticing throughout the day.
• Assist with the set-up, running and clean-up of functions and events.
• Work flexibly and in harmony with your colleagues across sites and departments, supporting each other to make best use of team resources, especially at busy times.
• Take the initiative and address problems or deal with tasks as they arise.
• Listen and respond open to visitor comments to ensure that visitors leave happy and looking forward to their next visit. Feedback any issues as they arise to ensure the smooth running of the site.

Generate the income that enables us to look after special places

• Be aware of the team’s targets for generating income and other key objectives and aim to achieve and exceed them.
• Work with the Visitor Services Manager and property staff to deliver financial targets and other KPI’s.
• Be proactive in upselling our café, shop and membership products and services by seeking to understand customers’ preferences.
• Be responsible for accurate and secure till operation and sales processing and support the reconciliation of end of day takings. Handling cash accurately and processing sales.

Maintain excellent standards of site and personal presentation and safety
• Help with behind-the-scenes tasks to prepare for opening at the start of the day and close-down at the end.
• Take pride in your surroundings by maintaining high standards throughout the day and helping to clean public and staff areas.
• Report all instances of damage, wear and tear or maintenance needs promptly.
• Ensure you are clearly identifiable and appropriately dressed by wearing uniform, name badges, and PPE as required.
• Share responsibility for the health and welfare of property staff, volunteers and visitors by adhering to NTS Health, Safety and Environment policies and guidelines.
• Work in cooperation with other departments; gardening, grounds maintenance, contractors and NTS staff.

JOB PURPOSE

As a front-line member of the Culloden team your job is give an amazing welcome and tell the story of this iconic site. You will be responsible for delivering our commercial offer which includes membership, general admission, donations, some retail products and travel trade. You will be part of our Visit Scotland 5-star team acting as an ambassador for the site and the National Trust for Scotland.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

This role will assist the wider Welcome team to deliver high quality visitor experience at Culloden Battlefield (including but not limited to):

• To provide excellent customer service.
• Be responsible and proactive. Ensuring all day-to-day tasks are completed including responding to customer enquiries, answering the telephone, cleaning, recording statistics etc.
• Working with the Visitor Services Manager (Welcome) and a Visitor Services Supervisor (Welcome) to deliver membership targets and KPI’s
• Cash reconciliation duties including end of day and administration tasks. Ensuring cash is handled accurately and there is continuity across all sales platforms
• To ensure perpetually high levels of accuracy are maintained for all transactions and data recording
• Working with the Visitor Services Manager (Welcome) and a Visitor Services Supervisor (Welcome) to deliver audio guide systems and other services efficiently to visitors
• To actively drive-up selling opportunities through strong product knowledge and an excellent customer service to maximise sales of admission tickets, membership and donations.
• Working with the Visitor Services Manager (Retail) and wider property staff to ensure high standards of display & merchandising at all times.

JOB PURPOSE
As part of the team which cares for Corrieshalloch National Nature Reserve, a Seasonal Ranger plays a crucial role in ensuring that our conservation ambitions go hand in hand with welcoming our local community and visitors from across the globe to this well-loved place.

You will share your enthusiasm for the outdoors and passion for the countryside with the visitors who come to explore Corrieshalloch Gorge

You will work out in the landscape, on walking routes, in our parking areas, at popular spots for views with some time at our visitor centre at Inverewe, acting as an ambassador for the National Trust for Scotland, building awareness and support for our charity. You’ll leave those you meet with a desire to respect, protect and enjoy this special natural environment and an understanding of how they can help do this.

You will work on your own and with other staff and volunteers, on a variety of practical conservation tasks to help us achieve the high presentation and habitat management standards expected of a National Nature Reserve.

You will contribute to the long-term sustainability of Corrieshalloch ranger service through income generated at payed-for events, memberships and donations inspired by our work, growing our capacity through volunteers and cost-effective use of resources.

Nature Conservation
 Be an enthusiastic and effective part of the ranger service, contributing to the smooth operation and ecological enhancement of Corrieshalloch NNR.
 Get involved with practical conservation tasks, including woodland management, path maintenance and fence repairs, litter clearance and property patrols.
 Seek to minimize our environmental impact through sustainable working practices and sensitive use of power, equipment, transport and other resources.
Visitor Engagement
 Participate in a programme of estate patrols at busy times and locations, including weekends and evenings, to engage with tourists, outdoor activity enthusiasts and campers, championing a “leave no trace” culture and providing practical advice based on the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
 Welcome customers in our car park in a friendly, efficient and knowledgeable manner, answering queries and providing information about the property, facilities and the local area.
 Contribute to the development and delivery of products that bring alive our stories, including on-site displays, self-guided trails, signage, guided walks, talks or other hands-on activities.

Working together
 Recruit, induct and supervise volunteer roles to help grow our team’s capacity and assist with the leadership of group volunteering activities as required.
 Build positive relationships with our neighbours and local community, including other land managers, schools, community groups and recreational users.

Funding our future

JOB PURPOSE
Ben Lawers NNR is the most important mountain area in the UK for rare arctic-alpine plants, some of which occur in few other locations. It is also a popular recreational destination, with over 40,000 visitors a year heading for the summits. The work programme includes visitor management and liaison, and associated conservation tasks such maintenance of footpaths and other infrastructure.
We are looking for a Seasonal Ranger to be an enthusiastic and effective part of the ranger service, contributing to the smooth operation and conservation management of Ben Lawers NNR. You must have experience of practical countryside management and good communication skills to join our close-knit team. You will carry out practical estate management and engage with visitors.
The role is a physical one, requiring walking to worksites, some at high altitude, with appropriate tools. Work may be alongside other staff and volunteers but there will be a requirement for lone working.
The role will be ambassadorial, building awareness and support for the National Trust for Scotland leaving those you meet with a desire to respect, protect, and enjoy the special natural environment and an understanding of how they can help to contribute their support to the property.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Estate management
 Carry out practical tasks, including maintenance and repair of footpaths, fences, stiles and other infrastructure and vegetation clearance.
 Assist with patrols of popular routes and informal parking and camping sites, clearing litter and monitoring numbers and impacts.
 Monitor the use and condition of interpretation, footpaths and infrastructure to prioritise the programme of maintenance.
Visitor Engagement
 Welcome visitors in a friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable manner, assisting with car parking, answering queries and providing information about the reserve, facilities, and local area.
 Actively and positively engage with visitors while carrying out practical tasks to raise and improve public awareness of key issues including the Scottish Outdoor Access Code (SOAC) and responsible access, footpath erosion and landscape protection, habitat restoration, and promoting the work of the Trust.
 Assist with events and onsite activities when required.
Other duties
 Assist with other areas of property work, such as habitat management including tree planting, seed collecting and tree nursery work if/when necessary.
