JOB PURPOSE

The Curator provides curatorial support for the National Trust for Scotland’s Highlands & Islands region. They ensure that the cultural heritage of the properties in the region is well researched, understood and interpreted for the public. They have particular responsibility for the object collections at the regions properties, but will also work with landscapes and gardens, facilitating cross-disciplinary research and ensuing integrated interpretation across all aspects of properties.

Thank you for your interest in the post of Steward with Historic Environment Scotland, based at Dirleton Castle. This is a full time and pensionable appointment.

You will be responsible for delivering the highest standards of visitor experience working across all areas, including in the shop, admissions area and outside, with delivery of information to visitors a core part of the role.

We are looking for someone who enjoys interacting with diverse groups of people, who has a passion for customer service and who would thrive in a fast paced and constantly changing workplace.

We are preparing for the festive season and want to hear from jolly individuals to create magical moments for our young visitors this Christmas. Working closely with your team of Elves, you will engage and delight our visitors, helping to ignite their yuletide spirit.

• Are you patient, upbeat and friendly, with the ability to make our visitors feel comfortable?

Previous Santa experience is an advantage. This is a seasonal position from 24th November to 24th December and weekend working is essential.

Dalkeith Country Park has been enjoyed by visitors for 120 years and its woodlands, riverside trails, cycle tracks and events calendar are valued by visitors from near and far. We have an outstanding opportunity to join our team at our Royal Lochnagar Visitor Center as a Brand Home Lead Guide.

You will be responsible for:

As a Brand Home Lead Guide, you’ll be vital to the day-to-day management of the Brand Home, organising tours and allocating them to your team. You’ll provide vital support to the Management team with all operational activities relating to the experiential, bar and retail offerings.

Our Brand Homes showcase to the public who we are and what we do. You’ll be responsible for driving the performance of the Brand Home and ensure that the team deliver extraordinary standards of customer service and outstanding and memorable visitor experiences.

You’ll provide daily support and supervision of the Brand Home Guides and agency staff, including scheduling, monitoring and recording of working hours, supporting new and ongoing training to the team as well as ensuring ongoing personal development and the reporting of team performance and targets.

Our retail area holds our impressive range of Scotch and you’ll play a key role in supporting the Management team with retail strategy and visual merchandising management. You’ll also help with the planning and the implementation of special events throughout the year. Not only will you support the Assistant Managers in event strategy, but you will be vital in building community engagement and the delivery of the Brand Home sustainability ambition.

This role will require weekend and evening work, with opening and closing responsibilities.

Purpose of the role

To assist the Head Chef in the day-to-day management of the Catering & Hospitality offer at Robert Burns Birthplace Museum to ensure that all targets are met and all visitors receive the highest level of visitor experience standards.

Key Responsibilities
• Contribute to food production as per the menu cycle/specification and event Food Production (corporate, hospitality, meetings etc)
• Keeping up to date HACCP, COSHH checklists and temperature sheets.
• Ensure high Standards of Kitchen Hygiene, Cleanliness, Tidiness and related Schedules
• Use fresh Produce and Ingredients whenever and where-ever is possible and minimise wastage.
• Maintain a high standard of Food Presentation to the Customer
• Share in the common responsibility of implementing the Trust’s “Health & Safety Policy”, being mindful at all times of the health and safety of self, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
• Share in the common responsibility of working in a manner mindful of the Trust’s obligations to minimise impact on the environment, through e.g. efficient use of water/heat/light, recycling and the disposal of waste, considered use of transport
• Help to reduce occurrences where Health or Safety of yourself and other employees may be put in jeopardy
• Adherence to the COSHH Training provided and control of substances covered by COSHH
• Involvement in the upkeep and maintenance of both the entire department site and, specifically, the Catering Outlets
• Assist with daily cleaning and pot wash duties

To ensure that the garden, grounds and related policies of Culzean Castle are managed and maintained as a nationally-recognized garden of outstanding historical and horticultural importance; contributing to the property’s overall conservation and development, and its enjoyment by visitors and supporters.

The role of ‘Gardener’ as a key member of the Culzean team will be heavily involved in the development plans of the garden and wider designed landscape.

CONTEXT

Culzean Castle & Country Park:
The National Trust for Scotland’s (the Trust’s) property at Culzean is located on the Ayrshire coast of the Firth of Clyde, some 19 kilometers south of Ayr. The estate has been in existence since the 16th century and comprises the former seat of the Kennedy family – Culzean Castle – together with the core 228 hectares of Cassillis and Culzean Estate. The 5th Marquess of Ailsa, with the Trustees of the 4th Marquess, gave the Castle, some of its contents and the designed landscape to the Trust in 1945. Culzean became Scotland’s first Country Park in 1969 under the Countryside (Scotland) Act and is managed by the Trust. The centerpiece of the property is Culzean Castle, acknowledged as Robert Adam’s masterpiece in the Romantic Castellated style, matched by its sublime cliff top site. The designed landscape contains a rich variety of features, including some by Adam, such as the Viaduct and the Home Farm, to complement his design for the Castle, and is important also for its gardens, policy woodland plantings and natural heritage.
