Operations

This is a specialist conservator role, delivering time-based media conservation across the collection. As a newly created role, it is likely that it will develop over time and that the post-holder will help to shape it.

The Time-based media conservator role is based within the Collections Care Directorate, reporting to the Senior Projects Conservator. It sits alongside and complements the other conservation specialisms of paper, paintings, frames and sculpture. The time-based media conservator works primarily with artworks but may also be asked to advise on the care of time-based media within the archive.

Key responsibilities:

• Assist colleagues with the planning and programming of the time-based media conservation work required to deliver the acquisitions, displays, exhibitions, loans and collections care activities which are scheduled.

• Keep records of work undertaken over the course of the year and liaise with colleagues to flag up any anticipated issues with the delivery of the work programme and to advise on whether additional requests can be accommodated.

• Undertake the conservation work required for exhibitions and displays of time-based media works, both within NGS and at non-NGS sites, including advising on the suitability of works of art for transport and display, condition checking, conservation treatments and application of preventive conservation measures. Additionally, where appropriate assist with the installation of time-based media works.

• Undertake the conservation work required for acquisitions of time-based media works including ingest into the current digital preservation system and all relevant documentation.

• Undertake time-based media conservation work required to improve standards of collections care, such as condition surveys of targeted parts of the collection and relevant remedial treatments of objects in poor condition. This includes working with the CIDAM and IT departments to manage and maintain the TiBM digital repository.

• Carry out a range of written and electronic documentation, including requesting photography, communicating findings and providing data for entry onto the NGS collections management database (Multi Mimsy) and NGS website.

• With colleagues, respond to any incident reports which relate to time-based media works.

• Liaise with conservation technicians and art handling technicians to ensure that works are safely packed and installed, which may involve designing specialist storage and display equipment.

• Work with colleagues to ensure that the equipment required for or included within the TiBM collections is fit for purpose and adequately maintained, and where appropriate research options for new equipment purchases. Work with the Senior Projects Conservator to maintain and implement the TiBM equipment asset register

• Where appropriate, undertake art historical research relating to parts of the NGS time-based media collection, and conservation research relating to relevant conservation issues, materials and techniques.

KEY PURPOSE

As part of the property team, assist with the conservation and development of the properties and gardens to ensure that Leith Hall and Estate are presented at the highest standards to its visitors and guests.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Key Purposes of the job will be met by:
1. Undertaking practical maintenance of the garden (e.g. managing trees and shrubs, herbaceous plants, and bulbsturf care; pest/disease/weed control; composting and soil improvement; hard-landscaping; path care) to the required standards expected by the Trust and for the maximum safety of, and enjoyment by, visitors;
2. As requested, assisting with education/interpretation activities such as introductory talks and guided walks;
3. Fostering positive relationships promote the work of the Trust, and actively seek opportunities to increase Trust membership;
4. On occasion, working with volunteers and/or staff members to ensure they deliver required outputs at the appropriate standard, and gain benefit/satisfaction from their activities;

People Management
 Not a line manager but will, on occasion, supervise volunteers and staff under instructions from Head Gardener;

JOB PURPOSE
To monitor the population and breeding success of selected seabird colonies to gain a greater understanding of the status of the colony and the threats and issues affecting it will be gained. This information will help in the protection of the seabirds and increase our understanding of the populations and environment.  To liaise with boat operators and dive groups and develop a programme of marine recording

JOB PURPOSE
This post plays a crucial role in welcoming visitors from across the globe and acting as an ambassador for the National Trust for Scotland, building awareness and support for the charity leaving those you meet with a desire to respect, protect, and enjoy the special natural environment and an understanding of how they can help to contribute their support to the property.
The ranger post is responsible for day-to-day liaison with the local community including QinetiQ, contractors and boat operators to ensure appropriate information is communicated regarding safety, biosecurity and conservation and for reporting back on island activities to the Western Isles Manager
There will be a requirement for lone-working and with other staff and volunteers, on a variety of practical tasks to help achieve the high presentation standards expected of a World Heritage Site, National Nature Reserve, Site and Scheduled Area.

• Providing a warm welcome to visitors and ensuring that information for a safe and enjoyable visit is communicated appropriately,

Purpose of the role –
The role’s purpose is to assist the management of Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve (NNR) by carrying out botanical and other biological monitoring, as part of an ongoing programme, to inform management.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Carrying out repeat monitoring of rare vascular plant species.
2. Carrying out other monitoring as directed.
3. Writing reports on the above as required.
4. Ensuring that all activities undertaken are compliant with the property’s Safe System of Work.

Scope of Role:

Botanical monitoring
 Carry out repeat monitoring of specified rare species at known locations on Ben Lawers SSSI (training in identification and method will be given).
 Assist with other monitoring and recording of key species and habitats if required.

People Skills
 Working closely with other property staff and liaising with other Trust staff as required (eg. Natural Heritage Adviser).
 Not a line manager may supervise and work with volunteers.
 Occasional interaction with members of the public of all ages and abilities.

Financial Management
 Not a budget holder and will be expected to liaise with the Property Manager (budget holder) prior to incurring any expenses and be mindful of effective management of Trust funds and resources.

Reporting to the Operations Manager this role is to assist in the operational delivery of Musselburgh Racecourse with particular focus is on the Sensational 7 raceday’s which require accurate planning and exceptional delivery.

Raceday
– Assist on raceday set up including entrance systems.

JOB PURPOSE
The role of Paths and Access Ranger will combine responsibilities for visitor engagement, upland path repair, nature conservation and contribute to the delivery of the National Trust for Scotland’s conservation and operational objectives at Ben Lomond.
CONTEXT
The Ben Lomond property extends to over 2100 hectares and is situated on the East side of Loch Lomond. The property includes 10km of two of the busiest hill paths in Scotland, attracting in the region of 50,000 walkers per year. Much of the property is a SSSI, but also a tenanted hill farm, with long-term objectives in progress to balance land use with habitat protection and restoration. The ranger service operates from Ardess Lodge, near Rowardennan.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Combine responsibilities across the following areas of work through direct implementation, through close liaison with the Property Manager, and by facilitating and overseeing the work of others, i.e. volunteers.
Upland path repair and maintenance.
• Assist in the prioritising and planning of upland path repairs on Ben Lomond and Ptarmigan, in conjunction with the Property Manager and the NTS Mountain Path Team.
• Carry out regular upland path repair and maintenance, to industry standards, as required at all altitudes on the property.
• Lead volunteers and others as appropriate in safe maintenance and repair of upland paths.
• Assist with the maintenance of other paths and access infrastructure on the property, including vegetation management and tree safety.

Visitor Engagement.
• Actively and positively engage with hillwalking visitors to raise and improve public awareness of key issues including path erosion and landscape protection, dog control, wildlife protection, funding and membership support.
• Engage visitors and promote the work of the Trust through developing, conducting and assisting with guided walks, talks, events and by other means of interaction such as social media.

Nature Conservation.
• Assist with estate work such as fence repair and maintenance to further the nature conservation objectives of the property.
• Assist with the programme of habitat and species monitoring when required.
Community engagement.
• Work with the Property Manager/Ranger to communicate with local stakeholders, businesses, local / regional agencies and others to increase understanding of their and our aims and develop collaborative working relationships/partnerships to help deliver the Trust priorities.

• Work with the Property Manager/Ranger to develop and deliver educational and outreach activities on site or to the local and wider community, to promote the cultural and natural heritage of Ben Lomond and the work of the NTS, and to maximise opportunities for people from diverse groups and backgrounds to engage with the property.

JOB PURPOSE
To carry out maintenance and repair of upland footpaths and fences to assist delivery of the National Trust for Scotland’s management objectives on Ben Lawers NNR. Keeping the footpath network in good condition to minimise the impact of erosion on the landscape and important plant communities and areas of restored habitats protected from large herbivores.
The role is a physical one, requiring walking to worksites, some at high altitude, with appropriate tools, on a daily basis. Work may be alongside other staff and volunteers but there will be a requirement for lone working.

DIMENSIONS AND SCOPE OF JOB

You will assist the Building Services & Energy Manager by taking operational control and management of the Operation and Maintenance contract for electrical engineering services across the estate of the National Museums Scotland. Qualified to HND level (or equivalent) in electrical services, complemented with a high level of practical and theoretical knowledge of estates electrical services, you will be able to apply your technical knowledge to the management of the plant operation and maintenance of the estate. You will have knowledge and experience of technical aspects of electrical services and of Health and Safety requirements. A proactive manager of contractors and budgets, you will actively contribute to, and coordinate small works projects, will be able to prepare reports and liaise effectively with a range of client stakeholder staff across the
estate.

Working across all sites with National Museums Scotland in the provision of estates services delivery, you will be required to participate within the department emergency oncall rota, providing emergency protection for National Museums buildings and estate.

A driving licence is essential.

JOB PURPOSE

As part of the team which cares for Glencoe National Nature Reserve, a Ranger plays a crucial role in ensuring that our conservation ambitions go hand in hand with welcoming our local community and visitors from across the globe to this well-loved place.

You will share your enthusiasm for the outdoors and passion for the countryside with the walkers, campers and sightseers who come to explore our 14,000 acre estate, including eight iconic Munros, in Glencoe and Glen Etive.

You will work on your own and with other staff and volunteers, on a variety of practical conservation tasks to help us protect the landscapes in our care, as part of ecologically healthy habitat networks where natural processes predominate and help combat climate change.

You will work out in the landscape, on walking routes, in our parking areas, at popular spots for camping and at our visitor centre, acting as an ambassador for the National Trust for Scotland, building awareness and support for our charity. You’ll leave those you meet with a desire to respect, protect and enjoy this special natural environment and an understanding of how they can help do this.

You will contribute to the long-term sustainability of Glencoe’s ranger service through income generated at pay-for events, memberships and donations inspired by our work, growing our capacity through involving volunteers and cost-effective use of resources.
