JOB PURPOSE
National Trust for Scotland (NTS) is embarking on an ambitious review of the content of our corporate archive, the service delivery model, and the long-term storage of the archive. The NTS archives include collections currently held at a number of properties and offices across Scotland, as well as Hermiston Quay, the NTS headquarters building. This new role is part of a dedicated project team working closely with the NTS Archivist to support an ambitious programme of work.

The Review Archivist will lead on a programme to review the National Trust for Scotland’s physical corporate and historic property archive collections. You will develop a methodology which will identify and collect information on the significance of collections, providing data that will support future planning of the care, exploitation, and development of archive collections. Working with the Programme Manager, external consultants, and the Digital Archivist, you will have the chance to lead this critical strand of the wider programme. This work will be undertaken in liaison with the NTS Archivist, who will continue to manage the archive. To achieve this, you will develop opportunities to promote the Archive Service and engage with a range of internal stakeholders with the programme. The post-holder may also be expected to supervise the work of an Archive Review Assistant later in the programme.

As part of the wider development programme for the Archive Service, the Review Archivist will also contribute to the development of strategy for the service, investigations of new storage, and support a programme of digital preservation. This role provides an unrivalled opportunity to learn about and improve the management of the collections in historic properties across the country.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Responsible for the development of the archives review programme/survey, working with colleagues and external consultants to develop a comprehensive understanding of NTS collections.
• Deliver the physical archives review programme/survey, working with colleagues to collect data on NTS archive collections across all sites.
• Survey archive collections held in NTS historic properties and headquarters.
• Develop an understanding of the significance of NTS collections, enabling future planning of the archive service.
• Analyse the results of the review and provide regular updates and data to the wider Archive Programme team and other internal and external stakeholders.

JOB PURPOSE

The Digital Archivist will be responsible for establishing digital preservation principles and good practice at NTS. The role includes undertaking a survey of born-digital archives currently held in the archives and working with colleagues in Corporate Services to identify born-digital material being created across the organisation. The post-holder will liaise with colleagues across the organisation and with external consultants to make recommendations on the procurement of a digital preservation system for NTS.

The role will include opportunities to contribute to the other strands of the programme which includes a review of the physical collections and the re-housing of the Trust’s corporate archives. The programme, supported by external consultants, will engage internal stakeholders and with colleagues across the archives and digital preservation communities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Lead on a survey of born-digital archives already identified as part of the NTS archive.
• Liaise with colleagues in Corporate Services to continue to develop and manage the retention schedule for digital records created by NTS.
• Work with the Programme Manager to review the existing digitised collections with a view to making recommendations relating to the cataloguing of and access to material.
• Deliver a programme of activities relating to born-digital archives which will contribute to the enhancement of the NTS collections and the Archive Service, with an emphasis on improving staff access.
• Engage with colleagues across the archive and digital preservation communities as part of a comparator analysis to identify good practice and establish monitoring/reporting benchmarks.
• Develop, in consultation with internal stakeholders and external consultants, a digital preservation strategy for the long-term security of the Trust’s born-digital and digitised archives, including the photographic archive.
• Support the Archive Programme Manager with the procurement and then lead on the roll-out of a new digital preservation system, including documentation and training.
• Develop workflows for a programme to process the backlog of born-digital archives taking GDPR, copyright, and NTS business needs into consideration.
• Work with the Digital Collections Asset Manager to review and improve access to and management of the photographic archive.
• Contribute to the development of a vision, strategy, and five-year Action Plan for the Trust’s archives and the wider Archive Service.

Assistant Registrar (Collections Information), BAND 7
Full Time, Permanent
Salary £ 21,379 – £23,553

The main purpose of the post of Assistant Registrar (Collections Information) is to provide effective support to the Collections Management Department and manage specific areas of work. The post holder will take a proactive approach to these responsibilities and will also play a key role in the Art Movement Team in support of delivery of collections management functions relating to movement of artworks. The postholder should be willing to undertake a variety of tasks, including repetitive work. A methodical and accurate approach is required, and the ability to communicate easily with staff at all levels in the Department.

The post is based at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, within the Collections Management Department.

The Assistant Registrar (Collections Information) will report to the Store Manager: Collections.

Key Responsibilities
• Inputting and updating location information and changes for all artworks, including AR collection.
• Assisting with delivery of NGS Collections Auditing programme.
• Delivery of discreet cataloguing projects.
• MimsyXG related tasks, including performing updates to collections information, administering Mimsy Helpdesk, assisting with Mimsy/website updates, generating reports, listings and documentation direct from Mimsy
• Dealing with queries from staff and public relating to location of works of art and catalogue information on Mimsy.

To ensure the preparation for safe movement, display, installation, transportation and
storage of artworks from Perth and Kinross’ Recognised Collection of National Significance and assisting with those from our lenders.

This role requires expertise in handling the Art collection principally but also other types of museum objects; assisting with busy installation and de-installation periods as required. The role includes documentation, care and maintenance of the storage and display areas, exhibits and equipment.

Note that this is an on-site role that is unsuited to a hybrid working model.

Many National Trust for Scotland places are deeply connected to the history of slavery and colonial narratives. To meet growing public interest in these histories there is an increasing need for the Trust to understand and share these stories as part of our interpretation at these places. The National Trust for Scotland is running a research and public engagement project that aims to research and understand our colonial narratives and collections, and share and engage with our visitors, members, communities and the wider public on the subject. The project will deliver property-level applied research on colonial links at a number of properties and new public engagement programmes, creative interventions and activities to tell these new stories. It would also take advantage of new and ongoing academic research activity on the subject by proactively seeking collaborative research partnerships with universities.

This permanent role will support the Project Leader and will have responsibility for co-ordinating all information, communication, monitoring and control activities for the project, ensuring that all information is up to date and accurate at all times. The post holder will co-ordinate with the Project Manager, Consultancy Services, Suppliers, including artists and community practitioners, and Regional and Property teams/Stakeholders to help deliver this project on time and within budget.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Monitor project schedules and budgets, prepare progress reports, and regularly liaise with key internal and external stakeholders in order to maintain information flow and to build effective working relationships

Manage the development, care, access and interpretation of Museum’s Recognised “Highland Folk” collections and related resources.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

JOB PURPOSE

The role of Engagement Ranger will combine responsibilities on nature conservation, visitor services, learning and community engagement and contribute to the delivery of the National Trust for Scotland’s conservation and operational objectives across the Dumfries & Galloway properties (Threave Garden & Nature Reserve, Rockcliffe, Vennie Hill, Murray Isles, Bruce’s Stone).
The Engagement Ranger role is positioned to provide an ‘on the ground’ support to the wider countryside properties in the cluster. Working as part of the estates team they will provide support in the day-to-day outdoor engagement activities throughout the year in conjunction with our onsite engagement team.

Overall, this will be in pursuit of the following outcomes for and with the natural heritage cared for by the National Trust for Scotland:

• Habitats: Assist with the protection of the habitats in the cluster’s care.
• Visitors and learning: Enable more people to experience cultural and natural heritage more often, get more out of it & put more back into it.
• Communities: Work with communities living on or close to our land or with an interest in our land so that they collaborate with us to help achieve our natural heritage outcomes.
• Built heritage: Work with the Estates Team to protect the built and archaeological heritage in our care and use them to help us explain the “habitats” outcome and achieve the “visitors” outcome.

JOB PURPOSE

A visible and senior management role where, in addition to the general operations management of the property in pursuit of their aims and objectives, the post holder will be responsible for the development of the property operating business planning process (working with the Property teams and Business Manager for the region who oversees this process) and utilising key sources of information and needs (e.g. conservation management plan; visitor/market research) to present effective and accountable business plans which underpin the properties financial performances, visitor experience, conservation delivery, reputation and maintenance. The post is based at Brodie Castle and reports to the General Manager for the Highlands and Islands Region.

HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS REGIONAL STRUCTURE

The Operations Manager will be constantly and consistently leading the development of visitor services excellence, commercial and enterprising activity, and change, ensuring place and content is engaging through interpretation and services and is the general custodian of its conservation and engagement obligations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Enterprise and trading – The business leader for the property, working with the support of the property managers and regional management team will plan and deliver innovative product and sales opportunities, integrated with the heritage site and particular visitor profile for that property / market.

People Management – Coaches and mentors property teams and staff who directly report to the post to ensure they are fully equipped and motivated to undertake their duties to the required Trust standards, policies, rules, values, delegated authorities, and objectives. S/he also plans for succession amongst staff and levels of responsibilities and other key posts within the property.

Promoting Heritage – Supports and coaches property staff to develop and promote their properties use and potential as a life-long learning resource, in line with the Trust’s ‘Education Principles’ and as part of its charitable aims (Access, Learning and Enjoyment).

Marketing, Membership and Supporter Development – drives business development and marketing of the property to maximise income generation. Working as part of a coordinated regional team and planning agenda, s/he will work with Customer and Cause colleagues centrally to optimise the visibility and promotion of the property.

Financial Management, Compliance and Scheme of Delegation – Responsible for budget preparation and control. Working closely with the Business Manager to devise effective plans, objectives and solutions and monitor performance (financial, project delivery, initiatives). S/he makes any corrective action required and ensures that the property remains within budget and acts within delegated financial authorities, wider schemes of delegation and adheres to Trust rules, policies, and procedures.

Health, Safety, and the Environment – Undertakes responsibility under the Health and Safety Policy including convening and chairing a group Health and Safety forum if applicable. S/he ensures effective support is achieved from Health and Safety advisors / coordinators assigned to the region and ensures property staff and volunteers adhere to their obligations in line with stated Trust systems, policies, procedures, and approaches to ensure the health, safety and environment under the Health and Safety policy and their job description.

Strategic Development of the NTS – Champions and supports the strategic development of the Trust, through participation in national initiatives, projects and working group activity as required and appropriate.

Staff and Volunteer Leadership – Leading, inspiring, and coaching property teams and individuals to ensure that they are fully equipped and motivated to undertake their duties to the required Trust standards, policies, rules, values, delegated authorities.

Stakeholder Management – Establishing and maintaining a network of localised external stakeholders (e.g., communities, business leaders, donors and supporters, affinity organisations) with whom synergy can benefit the property and wider Trust.
