The Art Movement Team, led by the Art Movement Manager includes three Senior Technicians, three Art Handling Technicians, the Collections Storage Manager and an Assistant Collections Information Registrar. This team alongside the Registrar Teams make up the Collections Management Department which, in conjunction with the Conservation Department (and CIDAM) make up the Collections Care Division. This Division is responsible for the care of the NGS Permanent Collection and works on loan to NGS.

Art Movement Team

The Art Movement Team works to national standards supporting complex national and international programming in the handling, packing, movement, installation and location tracking of a wide variety of artworks, including NGS Collection works and those on loan to NGS.

The main purpose of the post of the Trainee Art Handling Technician is to ensure the safe movement, transportation and installation of all artworks within the NGS, including collections from and returns of artworks to lenders. The post holder also assists in maintaining the upkeep of the storage areas, exhibits, tools and equipment.

The Art Handling Technician is responsible to the Art Movement Manager through the Senior Art Handling Technicians, to whom they are answerable for the performance of their duties on a day to day basis.

Trainee Art Handling Technician Duties:

• Safe and efficient movement of art works
• Assist maintenance of location records following NGS procedure
• Pack and unpack objects
• Use of computer for internal communications and access to standard forms and procedures.
• As part of the team, be responsible for care and maintenance of team equipment, including highlighting any concerns to the appropriate forum
• Develop an awareness of and commitment to health and safety compliance and best practice
• Any other duties appropriate to the post

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the General Manager- Visitor Operations is responsible for the overall management of the visitor experience and the smooth running of the public-facing areas, during both the standard daily operation and all out-of-hours events and activity.

Role Profile

A high degree of flexibility and the ability to manage effectively, both directly and by influence, is key to this role, which leads and champions a dynamic and visitor-centred approach at V&A Dundee. Directly responsible for a large team of managers and visitor assistants, and indirectly third party staff who work in visitor-facing roles, the General Manager- Visitor Operations will foster an environment that inspires the best in their team, working collaboratively to ensure everyone is heard and ideas are nurtured. The post-holder must be confident questioning anything that doesn’t put the visitor at the heart of what we do, and be comfortable working closely with colleagues across Programming, Development and Marketing teams, promoting holistic working practices and the building of a cohesive museum offer that takes in to close consideration the needs and wants of our audiences.

The front of house team is at the core of the visitor experience, committed to providing a memorable journey for everyone who comes to see us. We respond to visitor feedback, identify who each of our visitors is, and tailor each interaction appropriately. We recognise the importance of accessibility for all and, with our help, ensure that everyone can find a way of relating to our building and the space, whilst learning something new and exciting about design. We strive to increase exhibition ticket conversion, donations and gift aid when applicable, membership and retail sales, which in turn promotes museum sustainability and accessibility for those who need it the most.

Duties and Responsibilities

Working across departments, ensure that V&A Dundee adopts and embraces best practices in the industry, and prioritises a welcoming and inclusive approach to all its activities, whilst delivering service excellence

Promote V&A Dundee’s continued commitment to consistently delivering a world-class, 5* experience for all, identifying training opportunities and developing a learning and development matrix, ensuring the visitor experience team are confident in delivering this on a daily basis

Oversee all elements of the Front of House and visitor-facing function, including but not limited to, welcome and admissions, ticketing and box office, retail, gallery staffing and invigilation, visitor tours and gallery talks

Maintain full working operational oversight and knowledge of all areas, and the cascading of relevant operational training to colleagues, including POS System operation, Ticketing Systems, SOPs and Service Delivery

Line management of the Visitor Experience Team, including direct line management of 3x Visitor Experience Duty Managers, Event Manager, Retail Manager, Bookings Officer and Visitor Experience Officer, as well as indirect accountability for the large Visitor Assistant team

With support and direction, and in close collaboration with the General Manager- Health and Safety and Facility Maintenance, ensure all Health and Safety and Security processes and policies are regularly reviewed, updated and in place. This includes full responsibility for ensuring compliant and professional cash handling and banking processes, and all emergency response policies and procedures

Ensure the Visitor Experience team have access to regular training and professional development opportunities

Responsibility for operational budgets (Front of House staffing/deployment, training, security contract and all other relevant budget attached to visitor experience)

Work closely with the Events Manager and supported by the Director of Operations to continue to develop the Major Events Strategy for V&A Dundee, implementing and overseeing an efficient organisational-wide activity booking process that optimises resource, prioritises key activities and ensures collective vision

Liaise regularly with the Retail Manager and Retail team, maintaining excellence in retail standards and encouraging a dynamic offer specific to the audience at V&A Dundee

Using data and industry knowledge, develop, implement and monitor commercial strategies and KPI’s in all visitor-facing areas where revenue can be generated, included but not limited to, on-site ticket sales and conversion, on-site membership purchase, donations and gift aid information retrieval, retail conversion and spend and catering conversion and spend

Working with Bookings Officer and colleagues in Audiences and Media team, develop a successful Trade and Groups Business, maximizing opportunities to increase income via bespoke packages and to reach wider audiences

To build strong relationships with colleagues across the whole organisation, and externally with similar organisations and attractions, nurturing a strong professional network within Dundee and wider and to contribute positively to the regeneration of the waterfront and Dundee as a destination

Work closely with colleagues in Programming, Audiences and Media and Development, providing advice, feedback and ideas, to ensure the consistent delivery of a museum offer that is cohesive, holistic and responds to visitor needs

To nurture relationships across all teams, using diplomacy, empathy, and influence to help foster working environments that encourage the best ideas and ensure all are working towards a shared goal

Maintain a five-year vision of the Visitor Experience, Retail and Major Events strategies, in line with V&A Dundee’s business plan and Vision and Mission, ensuring adequate time and resource can be applied to achieve goals and all teams are working collaboratively to help get there

Essential

Proven experience in a similar role in a large venue or attraction, leading a team to deliver an excellent experience

Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of visitor needs, competition and bench mark indicators

Proven experience of developing and maximising the events business in a multi priorities organisation

Experience of managing both a large team, and a large venue, with multiple priorities, coordinating and leading on delivery activity

Experience of managing and monitoring of operational budgets

Knowledge and practice on Access policies

This job exists to:

Provide thought leadership and coordinate policy, standards and guidance on climate change issues within the National Trust for Scotland primarily focused on climate change adaptation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Lead on development of climate change related policy, standards and guidance. The key vehicle for this will be a new long term climate change adaptation plan. The plan will cover the full scope of NTS assets across the built and natural estate, working with the relevant sector and property specialists as well as external agencies and academics.
2. Procure specialist advice and research into heritage related climate change adaptation.
3. Establish a new NTS forum for sharing climate change issues and for development of policies, projects and plans.
4. Provide advice to property staff on request and through production of briefings and contribution to project development
5. Act as the lead NTS contact for climate change issues with external bodies including Scottish Government, Historic Environment Scotland, NatureScot, Scottish Land and Estates and Scottish Environment LINK
6. Lead on relevant Scottish and UK Government consultations relating to climate change
7. Act as the lead NTS contact and actively contribute to the international Heritage Environment Network
8. Devise and report on performance measures to track progress with compliance and implementation of targets within plans and strategies

This role is responsible for the development and delivery of informal education activities to help people learn more about Scotland’s marine and coastal environments and the amazing ecosystems and wildlife we have. Our goal is to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to engage with the Scottish marine environment and access to educational resources by increasing the diversity of audience (all ages, abilities, social background, geography) of beneficiaries that we can reach.

Our education activities have a significant outdoor component, and this is complemented by workshops sessions delivered at our Centre, or through outreach and physical and digital resources. The age range spans primary, secondary and tertiary with a growing focus on offering sessions for young people who may be disengaging from formal education.

Shifts vary, and normally consist of daily shifts of early Duty Tech 9am -5pm and late Duty Tech 10.30am-19.30pm (During peak season and weekends) and 9.30am -17.30pm (out of season).

KEY PURPOSE
To ensure that the garden and related policies of Threave Garden and Estate are managed and maintained as a nationally-recognized garden of outstanding historical and horticultural importance; contributing to the property’s overall conservation and development, and its enjoyment by visitors and supporters.

The role of ‘Gardener’ as a key member of the Threave Garden team will be heavily involved in the development plans of the garden and wider designed landscape, with future projects aimed at creating gardens of international significance. Hence this post will be vital to realize this ambition of the gardens as a top visitor attraction.

CONTEXT
Threave is one of the National Trust for Scotland’s top ten most visited attractions. The garden is made up of many landscaped features and themed areas including a Secret Garden, Rock Garden, Sculpture Garden, a variety of different water features, Azalea walk and heather beds, a one-acre traditional working walled kitchen garden, orchard, large nursery with new glasshouse facilities, extensive woodland garden and broad variety of themed beds and borders planted with a large and diverse collection of plants. Threave provides a perfect location for the Trust’s School of Heritage Gardening, offering a wide variety of horticultural experience in both traditional and modern gardening techniques. Open all year round, the garden provides interest throughout the year.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Key Purposes of the job will be met by:
1. Undertaking – Garden practical maintenance of the garden / walled garden (e.g. managing trees and shrubs, herbaceous plants, and bulbs; turf care; pest/disease/weed control; staking, plant nutrition, composting and soil improvement. Walled Garden – Sowing/growing and harvesting vegetables, pruning of fruit, weeding, planting and maintaining all areas, to the required standards expected by the Trust and for the maximum safety of staff and public, and enjoyment by visitors including other professionals in the horticultural industry;
2. Fostering positive relationships with local communities and organisations and promote the work of the Trust.
3. On occasion, supervising and working with volunteers and/or staff members to ensure they deliver required outputs at the appropriate standard, and gain benefit/satisfaction from their activities;
4. Demonstrating self motivation, organizing, planning, and prioritizing and good time management;
5. Undertaking such other reasonable duties as may from time to time be required to ensure the smooth running of the property as required by the Head Gardener.

SCOPE OF JOB

People Management
 Not a line manager but will, on occasion, supervise students, volunteers and staff under instructions from Head Gardener/First Gardener;
 Will work closely with other property colleagues, and will have some interaction with other technical/specialist advisory colleagues based in other locations and departments (e.g. other NTS gardens)
 Will have regular (daily) interaction with members of the public and guests of all ages and abilities.

The Hill House Conservation Project

The National Trust for Scotland is continuing a programme of work to conserve the Hill House for future generations to enjoy. This Project is the second and final phase of that programme, following phase 1 which concluded with the opening of the Big Box in 2019 and publishing of a Getty funded Conservation Plan in 2021. The temporary Box protects to the House allowing its fabric to dry out gradually and provides a unique view for visitors of the House from above as well as visitor facilities including a shop and café.

The Trust recognises that the Hill House is a special place, a complete artistic vision by one of Scotland’s most brilliant designer artists, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret Macdonald, for a house, with bespoke interiors and furnishings, set in specially designed gardens in a unique landscape setting. This project will conserve and restore that vision and share it widely, enhance the context of the House and provide a stimulating and enjoyable visitor offer that will sustain the House into the future.

Project outcomes:
• The physical repair of the Hill House fabric to resist moisture ingress in the long term.
• The conservation of the artistic and design vision of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s ‘total design’ intent for the Hill House, across all assets:
o Collection of Mackintosh designed and influenced objects and furniture.
o The interior and exterior of the house.
o The garden including garden structures and walls.
• The Hill House site is a low carbon, sustainable site.
• Engagement and sharing the ‘journey’ with the local community and wider community of interest.
• Providing visitor and staff facilities to support the operation of the site.

JOB PURPOSE

This job exists to:

Lead the Hill House Conservation Project and to plan, coordinate, manage, review and report all client-related activity on the project. In this role you will be the representative of the Client Oversight Group who in turn report to the Trust’s Executive Committee and Board. You will develop and deliver the Project to the requirements of internal ‘Customer’: The Regional General Manager.

Provide leadership to a team made up of internal NTS specialists and external consultants.

Be the conduit between external communities of interest, consultant teams and internal NTS teams.

Ensure that the project is delivered to meet the needs of the National Trust for Scotland and all statutory requirements and that the project progresses and is delivered to the desired quality within programme and budget.

Manage stakeholder relations and promote the project locally, nationally and internationally.

Maximise the opportunities to deliver core NTS objectives through the project delivery and the completed Hill House site.

Ensure that the project is handed over and closed in accordance with the NTS Project Management guidance, including developing and delivering an effective ‘soft landing’ strategy, organising necessary training on systems, post project evaluation and archiving of key Project documentation.

The Trust is organised across 4 Regions:
North East: Regional Office – Crathes Castle
Highlands & Islands: Regional Office – Balnain House, Inverness
Edinburgh & East: Regional Office – Newhailes House
South & West: Regional Offices – Culzean Castle (main), Greenbank House (northern hub)

Each Regional General Manager has operational responsibility through Property Staff for maintaining built assets and ensuring statutory compliance within their Region. The Central Buildings Team operates through a consultancy model with dedicated resource in each Region. The role of the Buildings Team is to provide NTS with professional and technical services in support of building conservation, maintenance and capital building projects across the Trust’s built estate. Each Region is currently supported by a dedicated Building Surveyor (or Architect) who ensures that NTS delivers best practice in building conservation and maintenance. You will be assigned to a Region, joining the Building Surveyor and providing a leadership role for building maintenance activity in your Region. You will also assist the Building Surveyor with larger project delivery. Your key day to day contacts will be the Regional Building Surveyor, Operations, Maintenance and Property Staff.

The Buildings Team is a national asset of the NTS and operates as a single team. Individuals will sometimes be required to operate beyond their ‘home’ Region or to provide specialist advice to other team members. In exceptional circumstances, individuals may be asked to relocate temporarily to deal with a particular situation eg as part of disaster recovery efforts. The role will also require occasional work outside core hours to deal with emergency or unplanned situations.

JOB PURPOSE

This job will support the National Trust for Scotland Strategy Conservation Pillar by contributing to improving the condition of our buildings, delivering best practice in built heritage conservation and maintenance management and supporting the safe operation of our sites.

Reporting directly to the Head of Building Surveying (Operations) you will be responsible for supporting and undertaking the planning and delivery of sensitive conservation maintenance and repair to NTS buildings and advising property operations teams on all aspects of buildings care. You will assist operations staff to maintain public access to sites and buildings during essential building work.

We are looking to for a full time Waterway Operative to enhance our team at Crinan Canal.

We are offering living wage + allowances (10% variable roster, 5.75% summer/ winter) for this role.

Day to day tasks, including challenging aspects of the job:

Comply with SC’s Health & Safety policies and defined standards. Report incidents, accidents and near misses. Support and contribute to ‘Behavioural Safety’.
Maintain accurate records as required such as timesheet, HAVs records etc.
Utilising IT for online training and online booking systems, WhatsApp messenger, Teams and emails.
Complete point of work risk assessments and adjust work methods where appropriate. Ensure all equipment (PPE, plant, materials etc.) are appropriate for the task in hand.
Ensure that the customer experience is maximised by providing outstanding levels of customer service, including anticipation of and response to customer-related issues
Manage and support the safe and efficient movement of boat traffic through the canal.
In accordance with Scottish Canals standards always promote the organisation by maintaining a professional approach and adhere to code of conduct, company policies and procedures.
Undertake the operation of structures e.g., locks, bridges and sluices in a safe and efficient manner ensuring care is taken to look after the heritage asset.
Undertake key duties associated with the daily operation and maintenance of the waterway and waterside e.g. towpath vegetation management, painting, litter collection, fencing repairs, pontoon redecking, refurbishing, and several other manual & practical duties that help maintain and repair the assets.
Operate appropriate plant & tools commensurate with the task in hand (having achieved the correct competencies / training).
Provide a first response for any emergencies/incidents that may occur on the waterway report and escalate according to company policy.
Support asset inspections, planned preventative maintenance Identify and report any structure failures, breaches, and damage or pollution incidents escalate through Line Management policy.
Contribute in the working of the emergency out of hours standby rota as directed by Line Managers. This includes a one week in four on 24hour call for 7 days including out of hours duty operatives handling water control and flood control situations and shipping lines.
Ensure that environmental and heritage issues are taken into serious consideration in all work that is undertaken.
Work outside in all weathers, PPE will be provided
Ensure great care with Scottish canals person equipment provide such as phones and lifejackets.
Skills and experience required:

Experience of working within an everchanging dynamic environment which includes busy customer service, safe boat movements and transit, general vegetation tasks including grass cutting, weeding etc.  general asset management, repair and refurbish.
Experience of working as a team member supporting colleagues with weakness and sharing skill set strengths.
Experience of computers and smart phones including email, online training, digital diaries and task-specific software
Proficient maintenance skills, such as painting, woodwork, fencing, concreting, use of hand tools and small power tools. Training will be provided.
Experience of administrative tracking e.g.: data recording using computerised or manual systems.
Able to communicate effectively with other team members and locations to allow for the efficient operation of the waterway. A flexible attitude towards the ever-changing business requirements
Must have a full UK driver’s licence and access to your own vehicle.
Ability to follow reasonable Line Management requests and prioritise workloads.

The post is 5 days over 7 working a variable roster over the Spring, Summer and Autumn periods and Mon – Fri in Winter. You may be required to participate in the Emergency Out of hours roster to undertake water controller/flood control duties and shipping lines.
